STILL LIFE PAINTING WITH ACRYLICS

with Shanley Cleeland

Inspired by Prue Acton’s current exhibition of ‘Still Life Painting’ children will create their own still life work using acrylic paint.  Participants will develop the skill of observation using patterns and lines and foster their own individual style of still life expression.

MONSTER MAYHEM (PASTELS & SCULPTURE)

Design an imaginary monster in oil pastels. Designs will be used to create your very own sculptural clay monster. Students will learn drawing and clay building techniques.

COLLOGRAPHS INSPIRED BY MATISSE

With printmaker Fleur Rendell

The collograph is a simple form of printmaking and a great way to get children started. This class takes inspiration from Matisse and his cut-outs using vibrant colours and form.  Children will attach foam shapes to cardboard to create their own designs for prints.

Prue Acton: Artist Talk

Join Prue Acton as she reflects on her time as a fashion designer and current role as full time painter.

For Prue, observation and aesthetics are powerful tools to explore the very nature of life and to respond creatively. She will speak about her creative life and love of painting, literature and history, including the principles underpinning colour relationship which continues as an ongoing research project with artist and art educator, Merv Moriarty.

Quartz String Quartet: Smetana & Schumann

FROM MY LIFE

Quartz’s unique programs shine a light on the string quartet repertoire by highlighting well-known pieces of beauty and energy.

Composed of four highly acclaimed Melbourne musicians Kathryn Taylor and Rachael Beesley (violins), Merewyn Bramble (viola) and Zoe Wallace (cello), Quartz’s performances are full of passion and vibrancy. Having performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre since 2013, their 2017 season presents two dynamic and innovative programs that focus on the composers Grieg and Smetana.

How to Make Australian Native Paper Flowers

Using a variety of coloured paper, Louise Seymour of the Paperlab will guide participants through a step-by-step guide to making Australian native paper flowers, including King Proteas, Bottlebrush, Gum Blossoms and other popular Australian flora and fauna.
The class will involve experimenting with paper sculpture methods including origami and kirigami techniques to create Paperlab’s Australian Natives in full colour. Louise will demonstrate how to shape cardstock, use dowel rods and floral wire and explore the wonderful world of Eucalyptus foliage to create unique and different flowers forms.

How to Make Beautiful Paper Flowers

Under the guidance of Louise Seymour from the Paperlab participants will learn how to create their own paper flowers using a variety of methods and specialist papers.

From Poppies to Peonies, the class covers paper types and will experiment with paper sculpture techniques to create realistic looking flowers.

Throughout the class Louise will demonstrate various techniques with paper and show participants how to sculpt using specialist tools. She will discuss the different qualities of crepe paper and how to use it to form perfect petals. You will learn all about flower anatomy and how to recreate nature’s finest floral specimens using crepe and tissue paper.

Piano & Cello: Stewart Kelly & Rebecca Proietto

STEWART KELLY (Piano)
Stewart Kelly is one of Australia’s most eclectic pianists and is also a pedagogue, piano importer and broadcaster. In 2017 he joins the faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School while also curating his sixth season as artistic director of the Con Brio concert series at the Arts Centre Gold Coast. Stewart maintains a career as a freelance pianist including as a sessional staff member at Monash University and the Melbourne Conservatorium at Melbourne University where he is the regular staff pianist.

REBECCA PROIETTO (Cello)
Sydney-based Rebecca Proietto has a Masters degree from Stony Brook University in New York where she studied cello with Colin Carr and now plays regularly with Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Australia Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House. 

Rebecca is also a regular performer with the ACO Collective and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. She has undertaken fellowships with both the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras and toured China with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2014 she was an emerging artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
